HEW How english works: Text Structure Learning Targets
• Apply understanding of how narratives are structured to comprehend the text.
• Support opinions in academic discussion using appropriate phrases with adverbs.
• Write a short explanation independently and justify your ideas using textual evidence.
Text structure
Most stories follow the same basic text structure, or plot. After the exposition, or opening, the story’s rising action leads to a climax. Details about the conflict are usually revealed at this time as well. Then, the falling action leads to the story’s resolution, or ending. These elements of plot help writers organize their ideas. The chart below tells more about plot structure.
