Quick Conversation
Share your work with your partner. Compare your ideas about the tone, imagery, and language of the monologue.
Next, read aloud the last two lines:
... so full of shapes is fancy That it alone is high fantastical.
Discuss the sentence. What does it tell you about the duke’s feelings about “fancy,” which is another word for love? Put these lines into modern language and record notes from your discussion.
I think the duke means when he calls love
“full of shapes”.
I agree/disagree because .
Based on , I think the duke feels that love is .
I would say these lines in modern language like this: .
After your discussion, do a Quickwrite, using the following sentence frame:

Read aloud your Quickwrites to each other, and then exchange quickwrites to add more ideas in writing to each other’s work.
Step 3: Prewriting
Use the graphic organizer and your quickwrite to plan your own interpretation of the duke’s monologue. For inspiration, you might also use a classroom computer to search the Internet for famous song lyrics about love. What words and images do the lyrics use to describe similar ideas about love? Then think about what inflections and actions to use in your presentation.
