Creative Writing and dramatic Performance Creating and Presenting a monologue
EmbEddEd AssEssmEnt
Step 1: Introduction
You will be writing and presenting a modern version of the duke’s opening monologue in Twelfth Night. Think about what the duke is feeling and saying about love. Even though his language is Shakespearean, he is expressing feelings and ideas about love that people today would recognize. Modern songwriters have said many of the same things about love, but their words and images are very different. How would you express these same ideas? Choose a tone, words, and images for your monologue that accurately capture the duke’s feelings in today’s language.
Writing Prompt:
You will write a modern version of the duke’s monologue and then present it. Be sure to:
• Decide what overall point about love the duke is making.
• Use the first-person point of view and modern language and images.
• Consider how the duke’s feelings shift during his monologue and how you will portray that shift.
• Include imagery, sensory language, and word choices that reflect the duke’s tone.
• Include poetic devices that contribute to the tone and mood of the monologue.
• Use verb tenses and pronoun references to help the audience understand.
Step 2: Brainstorming
Now you are ready to start thinking about the duke’s ideas on love. Review your annotations and notes on the opening monologue from Twelfth Night and use them to complete the graphic organizer.
