Language Resources: Formal and Informal Language
Formal and informal language are two very different ways of communicating. Formal language includes academic vocabulary and is used with facts and evidence when the vocabulary needs to be precise, such as in the classroom. Informal language is used in conversation and is a more relaxed way of communicating. You probably speak informally when talking to your friends. It is important to adapt language depending on the task.
Skim through Marketing to Kids Gets More Savvy with New Technologies, looking for evidence that teenagers are the targets of marketers. Discuss with a partner ways in which teenagers are targeted. Use the Language Resources: Formal and Informal Language chart for support.
Write two sentences you said to your partner. Then revise the sentences using formal language. Include a connecting word or phrase, and underline it.
