Sentence Type
Definition
Example
Simple
A basic sentence with a subject, verb, and completed thought; an independent clause
He rode his bike.
Compound
A sentence made up of two or more independent clauses joined by a connecting word
He rode his bike, but his tire was flat.
Complex
A sentence made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
After he ate lunch, he rode his bike.

Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences
Writers use a variety of sentences to vary their writing, as well as to join ideas together. The three general types of sentences are: simple, compound, and complex sentences.
As you read “Why Couldn’t I Have Been Named Ashley?” look for examples of simple sentences. Write example sentences in the chart. Then rewrite each sentence to be a compound or complex sentence. Use the Language Resources: Connecting Words box for support.
