Recognizing conflicts
The conflict or conflicts that occur are a central part of any story. They can be both internal and external. Writers use conflicts to advance other elements of the plot, such as the story’s rising action, climax, and resolution.
In the following plot diagram, some of the boxes have been filled in for you. Label the diagram with the conflicts that occur in “Eleven.” Include both internal and external conflicts. Use the Language Resources box to help you.

Multiple-Meaning Words
The word advance can have multiple meanings.
In this paragraph, it is a verb meaning “to move forward.” In other contexts, it can be an adjective or
a noun. The phrase in advance means “before something happens.”

Internal conflict: a conflict
in which the character struggles with something inside himself or herself, such as the character’s desires or emotions
external conflict: a conflict in which the character struggles with an outside force, such as another person or something in nature
Rising action: the main events that form the plot of a story; these events lead to the story’s climax
climax: the most exciting or important part of a story; the turning point
Resolution: the point at the end of the story when the conflict is solved or ended
