Personal Narrative Narrative Writing
EmbEddEd AssEssmENt
Step 1: Introduction
In this unit, you have read three narratives that all told the stories of young people who experience a struggle while growing up. Now you will be writing your own personal narrative similar to others you have read in this unit. Think about the personal experiences the writers shared in “The Jacket,” “Thank You, M’am,” and “Eleven.”
Narrative Writing Prompt
You will write a personal narrative about an incident that was difficult for you but which caused you to grow. Be sure to
• Establish the incident (setting, conflict, character).
• Describe the response (feelings and actions).
• Write from the first-person point of view and include details about the narrator’s and other characters’ feelings.
• Use figurative language such as similes and metaphors to let readers know how the narrator feels.
• End your story by reflecting how the narrator grew or learned from the incident. Step 2: Brainstorming
Now you are ready to start thinking about what you will write about. Work in small groups or with a partner to brainstorm ideas using the following graphic organizer.
