Lesson: Transitions (continued)
A transition that comes at the beginning of a sentence is generally followed by a comma.
EXAMPLES:
I am waiting for my bus. However, it is very late. In fact, I wonder if I have missed the bus and will have to wait for the next one. If so, it will be at least an hour before I get home. Meanwhile, I guess I will work on my reading assignment.
Check Your Understanding
Use an appropriate transition between the two sentences in each item. Be sure to set it off with a comma.
1. I usually don’t mind waiting for the bus. ______________________ it is starting to rain, the bus stop is not covered, and I don’t have an umbrella.
2. I can usually get some homework done on the ride home. ______________________ yesterday I finished two chapters of the novel my English class is reading.
3. Getting schoolwork done is a good way to pass the time on the way home. ______________________ some days I just look out the window and daydream.
4. One downside is that the bus is sometimes late. ______________________ I sometimes get home later than I like.
5. If I go to my aunt’s house, I take the downtown bus first. ______________________ I transfer to the #5 bus, which goes to her street.
For each item 6–10, write two related sentences on your own paper, with a transition at the beginning of the second sentence.
