3. Given the purpose and audience you have identified as a class, brainstorm possible ideas and information to include in the letter that would support the purpose. Use a graphic organizer similar to the one you used for the sample letter from Betty to Samantha.
Ideas/Feelings
News/Information
4. As a class, decide which ideas to include, and create a plan or outline for the order in which you will include them in the letter.
Drafting the Letter
5. As your teacher models the drafting process, create a draft of your class- constructed letter on your own paper. Copy what your teacher displays, and contribute to the group work with suggestions.
6. Remember to blend your information and news with your ideas and feelings (specifically your gratitude) and to create a sense of closure in the final paragraph of the letter.
Revising the Letter
7. Read over the class-constructed letter. What is the tone? Does the letter express the intended emotional message? Are relevant details included that attempt to engage the audience? Does the closing paragraph create a sense of closure?
8. Make revisions as a class. Add these additions, changes, or omissions to the copy you wrote individually as your teacher models the revision process.
