4. Informal letters can be used to convey both ideas/feelings and news/ information. As a class, discuss the difference between these two concepts. Then, use the following graphic organizer to identify the ideas and information presented in the sample letter.
Ideas/Feelings
Samantha misses Betty.
The last day of school was exciting and sad.
The carnival was fun.
Moving was even harder than Samantha thought it would be.
The two have not seen each other all summer.
Betty hit the target at the dunk tank and dunked Mr. Smith.
In her new neighborhood, no one asked Samantha to play.
5. Reread the closing sentences of the sample text. In the space below, summarize the purpose of those sentences and how Samantha brings the letter to a close. Share your ideas with the class.
Students’ responses will vary.
6. Now imagine that Samantha had a different purpose in mind. Instead of asking Betty to continue the relationship, Samantha thinks a long- distance friendship will be difficult to maintain and wants to part ways. Use the space below to revise the ending of the letter to reflect this change, while still maintaining a sense of closure.
Responses will vary but might follow something like this:
I will always remember the good times we had together in junior high, and I hope
you have already found a new best friend. Good luck and I hope the next school year is a good one.
