Learning Targets
• Analyze and explain in conversation and writing how imagery supports the hero archetype.
• Evaluate and explain in conversation and writing how effectively the author uses imagery.
• Express and justify opinions in conversation and writing by providing text evidence.
Using Imagery to Support the Hero Archetype
Homer uses strong imagery in the Odyssey to draw the reader into the trials that the hero faces. The imagery also helps to emphasize the heroic qualities of Odysseus, the hero, and the evil qualities of Cyclops, the enemy. In this activity, you will identify, analyze, and evaluate the epic’s imagery.
Read paragraph 17 of the Odyssey. Find four examples of imagery that directly support the Hero’s Journey archetype. Look for imagery that emphasizes the heroic qualities of Odysseus, the dangers of the Road of Trials, or the evil enemy. Write the imagery in the chart. Then analyze each example to understand the effect
the author is trying to create. Finally, evaluate how effective the imagery is in supporting the archetype.
