The author uses the vivid verb “guzzled” to describe how Cyclops drinks the wine Odysseus gives him. This verb shows how quickly Cyclops drinks, and it also shows how greedy and selfish he is. He doesn’t stop to offer anyone else a drink, and he doesn’t use any manners at all in the way he drinks. The diction that Homer uses helps the reader see the action and understand how Cyclops is a true monster, even in the way he drinks a gift.
