interacting in meaningful Ways: Writing a narrative
Learning Targets
• Express and justify opinions about the Hero’s Journey in conversation and writing.

• Combine clauses and use sentence length to create mood.
Review your annotations and notes on “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” and use them
to complete the graphic organizer.
Quick Conversation
Share your work with your partner. Compare your ideas about the setting, character, and events. Next, read aloud the last two sentences of paragraph 51:
‘I was the drummer boy at Shiloh.’ Who will ever hear those words and not know you, boy, or what you thought this night, or what you’ll think tomorrow or the next day when we must get up on our legs and move.
Discuss the sentences. According to the Hero’s Journey archetype, what will Joby do the next morning during the battle? Will he respond with courage? Will he keep his promise to the general? Record notes from your discussion.
