Ray Bradbury uses slow pacing in the last paragraph to emphasize the long night ahead for Joby. The slow pacing is created by one long sentence of combined clauses that describes the historical setting and April night before the battle. In my opinion, this slow pacing is effective because it helps the reader feel what Joby must be feeling while he waits for dawn.
