Quick conversation
• Share your work with a partner. Take turns explaining the sentence fragments you chose from the speech, your rewrites, and your evaluation of how the rewrites change the effect. Discuss why you think the speaker’s use of fragments is effective, and whether your partner agrees or disagrees with your evaluation. Record notes from your discussion.
In my opinion, converting the fragments into sentences changes the effect by .
Do you agree with my evaluation?
I think the use of fragments is effective because .
Write a short argument
After analyzing and evaluating the use of fragments in the speech by Cesar Chavez, you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose two fragments that the speaker uses effectively. Write a short argument in which you cite the fragments, state your opinion of how they are effective in the speech, and give a reason why. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.
I disagree with your evaluation because .

Chavez uses sentence fragments effectively in his speech. In paragraph 28, Chavez says, “But sometimes words come too cheaply. And their meaning is lost in the clutter that so often fills our lives.” Before these fragments, Chavez tells us how he talked to the farmwork- ers about the issue and how he spoke out against it. I think the use of the first fragment cre- ates an abrupt stop that emphasizes that talking and speaking are not enough. The second fragment creates pause and reflection. The effect of these fragments would be lost if they were rewritten as complete sentences.
