A symbol is an object, a person, or a place that
stands for something else. Symbolism is the use of symbols in a literary work. The excerpt opens with two boys on opposite sides of a fence. As we read, we learn that the two boys are on opposite sides in a much bigger sense, with Shmuel being Jewish and Bruno being the son of a Nazi.

Analyzing Dialogue to Understand Character and Theme
John Boyne uses dialogue in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to tell us about the main characters, Bruno and Shmuel. He also uses dialogue to reveal theme in the story. In this exercise, you will identify, analyze, and evaluate the author’s use of dialogue for characterization and to reveal theme.

Characterization: how a writer develops characters; for example, through description, actions, and dialogue
Theme: a writer’s central idea or main message about life
