Shmuel often talks about “us” and “we,” as in this sentence: “There were too many of us in the carriages for one thing.” It is important to understand that he is referring to the Jewish people who were rounded up by the Nazis. Bruno’s ignorance about who “us” and “we” are shows his complete misunderstanding of Shmuel and his situation.
