Use the graphic organizer that follows to plan your own summary. Think about one central point in the text, and make notes about it in response to the questions that follow.

What is the main idea? Why does the author make this claim?
What is the text evidence? Does the author use statistics, a chart, or other text features?
How does the evidence relate to the main idea? Does it prove the author’s claim?
Summarize
Write a summary of one of the main points of the article. Include what you consider to be the best evidence, and explain why. Use connecting words or phrases from the Language Resources box on page 56, such as: For example, According to, and In fact to express the relationship of the evidence to the topic.
