Write a Short Argument
After analyzing and evaluating evidence in $211 Billion and So Much to Buy, you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose one claim from your chart. Write a short argument in which you explain the author’s evidence for the claim, state your opinion of how effective it is, and give a reason why. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.

The author says that youth have huge spending power of their own and gives the evidence that over half of eight to 12 year olds will spend their own money on candy (61%) and toys (55%) while some will buy books (28%) and one-in-five will purchase clothing (19%). This is strong evidence because it includes percentages and specific details about what 8–12 year olds buy.
