After analyzing the imagery in “The Raven,” you have enough information to write a short explanation. Think about what overall effect or mood these poetic devices create. Write a short paragraph in which you describe an example of imagery and explain what effect it creates. Before writing, read the model short paragraph provided. Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery to create a dark and depressing mood to describe the setting in “The Raven.” The setting is a “midnight dreary” in “bleak December.” Midnight is a dark and scary time and a “dreary” midnight makes the time even more depressing. December is a cold winter month, and a “bleak” December is one without any hope. These details use imagery to create a sad, depressing setting and mood.
