After analyzing the poetic devices in the first stanza of “The Raven,” you have enough information to write a short explanation. Think about what overall effect or mood these poetic devices create for the reader. Write a paragraph in which you describe one of the devices and explain the effect. Before writing, read the model short expository paragraph provided. Notice what information is in each of the sentences. Try structuring your paragraph in the same way.

In “The Raven,” Edgar Allan Poe creates a strong rhythm by using poetic devices that emphasize the poem’s mysterious mood. The second stanza follows the rhyme scheme of the first stanza by rhyming the words “floor,” “Lenore,” and “evermore.” The rhyme scheme gives the poem a haunting quality that emphasizes the mysterious events.
