Interacting in Meaningful ways: Poetic devices
Learning Targets
• Analyze language choices to determine the effect on the reader.
• Express and support ideas in conversation and writing by providing textual
evidence.
• Write a short explanatory paragraph that explains the effect of poetic devices in a poem.
Poetic Devices
Poets use poetic devices to create a specific sound to their poetry. Like a song, a poem communicates much of its mood and theme through how it sounds. The sound effects are created by a combination of poetic devices.
Skim through “The Raven,” looking for examples of each of the poetic devices in the first stanza. Then explain what effect the poetic device creates for the last three poetic devices in the chart. Some examples and effects from stanza 2 have been provided for you.
