Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They tell about the strength, or intensity, of something. You can use the following adverbs to express how effective or powerful something is.

The figurative language compares the need for freedom to the need for food.

The word illusion can have several meanings that are very similar. In this instance, illusion means “something that seems real but is not.”

The figurative language compares the way Mandela lived his life as a result of his desire for freedom to the way a monk lives his life. Monks live away from the rest of the world and do not marry or have children.

Skim through the excerpt from Long Walk to Freedom, looking for examples of shades of meaning and figurative language. Write three examples in the chart. Then analyze each example to understand the effect the author is trying to create. Finally, evaluate the shade of meaning by choosing one adverb from the Language Resources list to express how effective you think the language is.

Multiple-Meaning Words
The word animated can have several different meanings. A film that is animated, such as a cartoon, is a series of drawings that are made to appear as though they are moving. A person that is animated is full of energy or interest. In fairy tales and fantasies, a lifeless object such as a broom or teapot might come to life and move, or become animated.
