Step 5: Editing and Revising
With a partner, review the Scoring Guide found at the end of this assessment again. Then look at the Student Narrative Text Exemplar, which you will receive from your teacher. Exchange drafts with your partner. Read each other’s drafts. Use the Peer Editing Checklist as you review your partner’s draft.
Peer Editing Checklist
Did the writer follow the prompt?
Did the writer include an incident, response, and reflection?
Is the writing organized in a way that makes sense?
Did the writer vary sentence structures to make the writing more interesting?
Did the writer include transitions to add details about the central idea and connect supporting paragraphs?
Did the writer include vivid verbs and figurative language? Are there any spelling or punctuation mistakes?
Are there any grammar errors?
Quick Conversation
With your partner, discuss each other’s drafts. Give feedback to help improve each other’s writing. Record notes from your discussion.
Look at the Peer Editing Checklist that your partner completed. Use it to help you revise your draft. Then use a classroom computer to revise and complete your draft. You may include graphics or images from the Internet to include in your final draft, but make sure they are appropriate. Check your final narrative against the Scoring Guide before you submit it to your teacher.
