Write a Short Argument
After analyzing and evaluating figurative language in “The Jacket,” you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose one simile or metaphor from your chart. Write a short argument in which you explain the meaning of the simile or metaphor, state your opinion of how effective it is, and give a reason why. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.

The narrator uses the simile “bitter as a penny” to describe how he felt at school dances. A penny is small, worth very little, and has a bitter taste. This simile tells the reader that the narrator felt bitter and worthless. In my opinion, this simile is definitely effective because it makes the reader understand exactly how the narrator felt.
