• Evaluate and explain in conversation and writing how effectively the author uses figurative language.
• Express and justify opinions in conversation and writing by providing text evidence and using nuanced modal expressions and phrases.
Figurative Language
Gary Soto, the author of “The Jacket,” uses figurative language to create effects by engaging the reader’s imagination. In this activity, you will identify, analyze, and evaluate figurative language.
Skim through “The Jacket” looking for examples of similes and metaphors. Write four examples in the chart. Then analyze each example to understand the effect the author is trying to create. Finally, evaluate the simile or metaphor by choosing one adverb from the Language Resources list to express how effective you think the simile or metaphor is.
