Language and Writer’s Craft: Choosing Sentence Structure
You may have learned already about simple, compound, and complex sentences. Writers use a variety of sentence types to keep the reader’s interest and to convey ideas most effectively.
Following is a review of the types of sentences you have learned about. As you write—and as you review and revise your writing—choose the type of sentence that is most appropriate for the ideas you want to communicate. Remember to use a variety of well-structured sentences.
Sentence Type

Example
Simple
A simple sentence has
one independent clause (a subject-verb combination).
Dogs howled.
The neighborhood dogs howled nervously.
Compound
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a semicolon or by and, or, nor, for, but, or yet and a comma.
The neighborhood dogs howled nervously, but the cat slept undisturbed in the house.
Complex
A complex sentence contains an independent clause and
a dependent clause (often signaled by a marker such as because, while, although, unless, until, etc.).
While the fireworks rocketed into the air, the neighborhood dogs howled nervously.

• Revise to improve transitions and to add variety in sentence types.
• Provide a strong conclusion that follow from the information presented.
Use your final essay to present to the class what you learned about Shakespeare through research.
