Second Read
• Reread the nonfiction text to answer these text-dependent questions.
• Write any additional questions you have about the text in your Reader/Writer Notebook.
15. Key Ideas and Details: What evidence in paragraph 7 supports the idea that sport had the effect that Mandela was counting on to unite his country?
The sentence “. . . he saw Pienaar raise the cup high above his shoulder as Mandela, laughing, pumped his fists in the air, and he struggled to believe what his eyes were seeing.” indicates that Mandela and Pienaar had achieved their goal.
16. Craft and Structure: Explain the expression “[t]here wasn’t a dry eye in the house” in paragraph 8. What did the author mean by “There wasn’t a dry eye in the country” in paragraph 9?
The expression “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house” means that everyone in the room — or the stadium — was crying. The author suggests that the moment was so moving that every person in South Africa was likely moved to tears.
Check Your Understanding
Paragraph 7 suggests that a Hollywood scriptwriter would change the final scene. Why do you think they did not? What responsibilities do you think an author has when portraying a true event?

Check students’ graphic organizers and oral responses during class discussions to see that they are making observations about the transformation of historical events into fictional drama and that they are using these observations to form predictions and make inferences based on textual evidence.
If you want to provide your students with additional practice in comparing text to its film adaptation, the following scenes elaborate on the issues explored in this activity: 58:30–1:10:57, 1:27:52–1:32:22, and 1:39:50–1:44:00.

14. Key Ideas and Details (RI.7.1) What evidence in paragraph 7 supports the idea that sport had the effect that Mandela was counting on to unite his country? Reread paragraph 7
for details about Mandela’s and Pienaar’s reactions to the rugby team’s victory. How was their reaction symbolic of the reaction of the rest of the country?
15. Craft and Structure (RI.7.4) Explain the expression “[t]here wasn’t a dry eye in the house” in paragraph 9. What did the author mean by “There wasn’t a dry eye in the country”? Based on what you have read and watched so far, why would South Africans in the stadium and everywhere around the country be crying at the moment described in the passage?
