Second read
• Reread the speech to answer these text-dependent questions.
• Write any additional questions you have about the text in your Reader/Writer Notebook.
1. Key Ideas and Details: Note the imagery of the last three paragraphs. Choose one of the images and explain why Mandela included it in his speech.
Answers will vary, but examples of imagery include “starless midnight,” “more precious than diamonds or silver or gold,” “new age dawn.”
Working from the Text
2. Quickwrite: What are some of the character traits that great leaders have in common? Who are some historical or modern figures that you consider to be great leaders?
3. Discussion: What made Nelson Mandela a great leader?
4. As you explore speeches by other great leaders, complete the following graphic organizer to evaluate the character revealed by their words. Think of their potential as a possible subject for your biographical presentation.
Name of Speaker and Quote from Speech
Character Traits revealed by Speaker’s Words
Why I Might Be Interested in researching This Speaker
5. Meet with your research group or partner and compare notes to generate a list of potential subjects for your biographical presentation and draft an initial set of research questions. As you consider subjects from your independent reading and begin asking questions, draw on the information you have learned in this unit about Nelson Mandela’s leadership. Then select a leader whose choices also had positive consequences for society.

8 After students have completed the Quickwrite about the traits
of great leaders, remind them of the quotations they interpreted
in Activity 3.15. You may want to engage them with the following brief film: http://www.greatquotesmovie. com/
TO Teacher
You may want to explain to students what the Nobel Peace Prize is. Also, many of Nelson Mandela’s speeches are available online. You may want to show students a video of Nelson Mandela delivering this or another speech in order to evaluate how
his delivery impacts his words and message.
9 Discuss the character traits that made Mandela a great leader. Some examples may be passion, hope, forgiveness, empathy, compassion, and generosity. Ask students
to begin brainstorming other contemporary or historic leaders that share these character traits.
0 Have students search online for other speeches by great leaders or provide them with printed copies
of a variety of speeches to analyze using the graphic organizer. Instruct students to use these resources and what they have learned about Nelson Mandela’s qualities as a leader to begin generating research questions. Remind students that their research questions should help them narrow down their potential subjects.
