Planning the unit
continued
3.16–3.17
2 class periods
In preparation for creating a biographical multimedia presentation, students will examine how biographical and historical facts are presented in media texts. Nelson Mandela is the subject for the anchor texts in this unit, enabling students to build research skills collaboratively as a class. Viewing a series of film clips from Invictus, students will examine how Mandela’s choices show his courage as a leader and
the positive consequences for society. Students will integrate information gleaned from the film clip with excerpts from a biography and the autobiography of Nelson Mandela to develop a deeper understanding of his leadership and choices. After
a comparative analysis of these genres, students will evaluate each source and the benefit of each. They will also consider additional sources that might be appropriate in preparation for the second Embedded Assessment.
3.18–3.19
3 class periods
At this time, students are learning the critical role of research, the impact of visual media, and the value of evaluating sources as they work to develop a multimedia presentation that presents relevant information with visual displays to clarify claims and findings. Students work collaboratively in small groups to generate questions, conduct research, and evaluate sources via an annotated bibliography. As students begin to present ideas informally, they have multiple opportunities to refine their presentation skills and practice how they might present information to maintain clarity and interest.
3.20–3.21
3 class periods
As students get closer to the Embedded Assessment, they consider how a leader’s core beliefs and character traits position him or her to be a great leader, and use that information to select relevant texts, visuals, quotes, and other material to include in their multimedia presentation on the leader of their choice. Continuing to build on students’ understanding of Nelson Mandela as a great leader, students will conduct a comparative analysis of multiple genres (e.g., poetry, nonfiction, speech, and film) to gain insight into the significance of Mandela’s leadership and his impact on society. These activities prepare students to work collaboratively
in discussion groups to analyze information, infer meaning, and understand its relevance to a multimedia presentation.
Embedded Assessment 2 2 class periods
By the time students encounter the Embedded Assessment, they will have started some preliminary planning to ensure they work effectively with a collaborative group to successfully complete the Embedded Assessment. After students finish the task, they will reflect on their learning in this unit and set learning goals for the next unit.
