Instructional Activities and Pacing
Total: 31 class periods
3.1
1 class period
Description
Students begin the unit by unpacking the Embedded Assessment assignment so they can understand the reading and writing expectations of the literary analysis essay on Edward Bloor’s novel Tangerine.
3.2–3.5
Part 1 of Tangerine 4.5 class periods
Students begin the novel by conducting a close reading of the book cover to make preliminary predictions about the novel’s motifs that can be confirmed or negated throughout their study of Tangerine. As they start to read the novel, students
will explore the relationship between choices and consequences. To support comprehension and analysis, students will use reading strategies such as double- entry journals, questioning the text, and discussion groups regularly. These close reading strategies help students make meaning from the text and identify relevant textual evidence to develop literary analysis paragraphs. Students are introduced to the first of six Language and Writer’s Craft mini-lessons on clauses, conjunctions, phrases, voice, and modifiers. These lessons are threaded throughout the unit
to provide ongoing practice in revising drafts for varying sentence structure in preparation for the Embedded Assessment. As students progress through their study of Tangerine, they will start to understand the story structure of the novel and how flashback, foreshadowing, motif, and characterization move the plot and conflict of the story forward.
