In Unit 3, students demonstrate mastery through writing a literary analysis essay focusing specifically on citing textual evidence to support their assertions. After analyzing a variety of texts from poems and films to literary nonfiction, students also research a leader and create a biographical presentation.
As you look at this unit, note the following:
• The Pre-AP® strategy SIFT is used to analyze how Symbol, Imagery, and Figurative language contribute to Tone and Theme.
• Language and Writer’s Craft exercises connect grammar rules with literary analysis revisions.
• Students are asked to analyze a poem, focusing on the literary term allusion, and make
connections between the poem and a novel.
• Student tasks include analyzing the motifs and themes of a story, finding and citing textual evidence, and working collaboratively with other students to outline their literary analysis essays.
• Leveled-Differentiated Instruction features provide support for English learners, including helpful graphic organizers.
• Support for close reading with standards-based text-dependent questions and scaffolds following each text.
