In Unit 3, students demonstrate mastery through writing an argumentative letter in which they make a claim about a topic of importance and support that claim with compelling reasons, textual evidence, and commentary. After analyzing a variety of informational texts from editorials and news articles to historical documents, students also research and debate a controversy.
As you look at this unit, note the following:
• The Pre-AP® strategy Adding by Looping is used to expand and enrich argument writing, providing students with a technique for adding emotional appeal (pathos) to their arguments.
• Language and Writer’s Craft features introduce formal style and techniques varying sentence types in order to keep an audience engaged.
• Students are asked to analyze an historical document, focusing on its formal style and tone, and to apply the understanding gained to write an original text using formal style and tone.
• Student tasks include identifying a writer’s claim, conducting research, evaluating the credibility of sources, participating in a debate using text evidence, and determining the purpose and effectiveness of graphics used to support an argument.
• Leveled-Differentiated Instruction features provide support for English learners, including helpful graphic organizers.
• Support for close reading with standards-based text-dependent questions and scaffolds following each text.
