Defining an American
My Notes
Writing to Sources: Explanatory Text
Write a short summary of de Crèvecoeur’s definition of an American using details from his letter to support your summary. Be sure to:
• include a clear statement of de Crèvecoeur’s main idea.
• provide an objective summary of his thinking, following his organization but stating his points in your own words.
• include at least one quote with original commentary. Punctuate the quote correctly.

Read and Research
In this unit and perhaps in your independent reading, you discovered how the
idea and experience of the American Dream changed lives. Extend what you learned by researching the subject
of your independent reading to find out what happened later in his or her life. Did the author or subject’s view of the American Dream change? If so, how? Share your findings with a partner.

13 Draw students’ attention to the Independent Reading Link.
Review students’ writing to determine that they were able to draft an objective summary that identified a central idea of the text, analyzed how the definition of the word American develops across the text, and included commentary that describes how the supporting ideas, reasons, and examples build to the main idea or point of the summary.
If students need additional help writing a summary, start with summaries of smaller parts (a few lines, a paragraph). Have students meet with partners to talk through the ideas from the text that they want to include in their summaries. The listener should take notes. Together, students should review the notes and evaluate which details warrant being included in a summary and check that no key detail has been left out.
