2. Key Idea and Details: In paragraph 1, what opinion does the author express about a poor “countryman’s” place in Europe versus his place in America?
The author says that Europe had no use for its poor people. As a result, the poor could hardly call their countries their own. But in America, there are new laws, social systems, and jobs for them, so they feel wanted, protected, and rewarded as citizens. RI.11–12.2
3. Craft and Structure: What does the word kindred mean in paragraph 2?
The author says that in Europe a poor emigrant had nothing but “the love of a few kindred as poor as himself,” which suggests that kindred means, “people like him.” Kindred, which contains the word kin, means “people who are related” or “people in similar circumstances.” RI.11–12.4
4. Craft and Structure: How does the meaning of the word industry change as the author uses it throughout the text?
In paragraph 1, industry refers specifically to the work by which new immigrants turn their labor into rewards. It allows a person to be a productive and engaged citizen. In paragraph 3, the word refers to the work done by all Americans, which is part of what makes the nation great. RI.11–12.4
