Learning Targets
• Analyze the ways in which an author conveys a perspective on imperialism through the interaction of individuals, ideas, and events in a reflective essay.
• Analyze the organizational structure of a reflective essay.
• Draft a reflective essay applying the organizational structure studied.
Organizational Structure of a Reflective Essay
A reflective essay is a kind of personal narrative in which the writer reflects on the significance of an incident.
• Event or Incident: The author describes some incident or set of circumstances.
• Response: The author describes his or her feelings and thoughts concerning the
encounter. This is the initial response, without the benefit of reflection.
• Reflection: The author reflects on the incident. This reflection usually occurs sometime after the event or incident. In the reflection, the author often transitions from describing a situation unique to him or her to a discussion more universal in nature.

TEACH
1 Explain that students will be reading a reflective essay that uses a recursive organizational structure that includes three elements:
• event—what happened, retold vividly
• response—the narrator’s feelings and thoughts about the event at the time it occurred
• reflection—insights gained and lessons the author learned
2 Before reading Orwell’s essay “Shooting an Elephant,” ask students to recall an event that taught them something valuable. Ask students to use the triangle graphic organizer as a prewriting strategy. They should note the event, their response, and their reflection on lessons learned. Students should then draft a quickwrite of the
event, including all elements, and think-pair-share responses with a partner.
3 After drafting, ask students to mark the text using three different colors to identify the event, response, and reflection in their drafts. If they are missing a component, provide additional writing time to revise the draft to include that component.
4 Connect the prewriting graphic organizer to the structure of a reflective essay. Students will use this structure when analyzing “Shooting an Elephant” and later to construct a plan for an original reflective essay.

Think about an event that taught you something valuable. Use the triangle graphic organizer to brainstorm details about the event, your response, and your reflection on the lessons learned. Then compose a quickwrite that includes these details. You will return to this draft later in the activity.

Select a point in your independent reading in which a character or the narrator experiences feeling like an outsider. Discuss with a partner or a group how the character reflects on this incident.
