Imperialism: A Poetic Conversation
My Notes
Check Your Understanding
In what ways is the perspective of imperialism portrayed in the advertisement similar to or different from the perspective of imperialism conveyed by the two poets you read earlier in the activity?
Explanatory Writing Prompt
Think about the text, illustration, and layout of the Pears’ Soap advertisement from an 1890s magazine. Use the space below to write an interpretation of this advertisement using the lens of Cultural Criticism. Be sure to:
• Write a concise interpretive statement about the advertisement.
• Include specific details from the advertisement to support your analysis.
• Use vocabulary appropriate for analysis using a Cultural Criticism lens.

ACTIVITY 1.17 continued
19 Ask students to respond to the Check Your Understanding question in a short written response.
20 To wrap up the activity, have students respond to the writing prompt. Remind them to deconstruct the prompt before answering it. To provide practice with timed writing assignments, consider providing students a total of 25 minutes to respond.
Review students’ responses to the Check Your Understanding question. Responses should make clear connections between the attitudes about imperialism conveyed in the poems and the attitude conveyed by the advertisement. The writing prompt will give you a chance to assess students’ understanding of the elements of Cultural Criticism. Make sure students have explicitly stated their interpretation of the advertisement, provided specific details from the advertisement
to support their thesis, and demonstrated a clear application of Cultural Criticism.
If students need additional help applying a Cultural Criticism lens to the poems and the advertisement in preparation for writing their interpretations, consider having small groups participate in a purposeful dialogue in response
to the Check Your Understanding question and the writing prompt. As students grow through the year, they are expected to master this kind of academic discourse. You may need to sit in as a participant at first, modeling respectful cooperation, open-ended questioning, responses that build on others’ ideas, and respectful challenges to their peers’ interpretations.
