Revising for Language and Writer’s Craft
Comparing and Contrasting for Effect: Poets and other writers use juxtaposition and parallel structure to highlight similarities or differences among ideas. Consider how William Shakespeare uses these techniques in the second quatrain of “Sonnet 29”:
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Featured like him, like him with friends possessed, Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
The phrase “with what I most enjoy contented least” is an example of juxtaposition because the “what I most enjoy” is juxtaposed to something which no longer makes the speaker feel “contented.” What connotations and associations do you have with the images of enjoyment and contentment? How does this contrast contribute to the poem’s tone?
6. Work with your class to generate a juxtaposition that would fit with your poem’s subject and tone.
7. Two lines of this quatrain provide an example of parallel structure because they follow the same pattern, or syntactical structure. Creating this pattern sets the reader up to expect a similar thought or idea. Reread the lines below, and identify how they express similar thoughts.
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope
Possible response:
By paraphrasing the parallelism is more obvious: Looking like him, like him possessing friends/Wanting this man’s style and that man’s knowledge
8. Rewrite at least one sentence from the class poem to add juxtaposition or parallel structure, and then share your proposed revision with the class.
Editing
9. After presenting your revisions to the class and hearing the suggested revisions of others, it’s time to polish the final draft of the poem by editing for mistakes. In addition to checking that you have consistent and purposeful capitalization and punctuation, read the poem out loud to a partner to make sure the lines make sense.
