personification

a comparison in which human qualities are attributed to non-human beings and things
simile
a comparison of two or more unlike things using the words like or as
juxtaposition
placing two things close together for the purpose of contrast
idiom
a phrase that takes its meaning from common usage by a particular culture
Sound Techniques
rhyme
the repetition of similar sounds in two or more words, often at the ends of lines
alliteration
the repetition of initial consonant sounds
parallel structure
the repetition of the same pattern of words or phrases
enjambment
when a line ends so that the meaning runs over to the next line without terminal punctuation (an end-stop)
Poetic Elements
quatrain
a group of four lines that comprise a stanza or follow a specific rhyme scheme
couplet
a pair of rhyming lines
rhyme scheme
a pattern of rhymes between the lines in a poem
meter
the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
Descriptive Language
vivid verbs
strong action words
connotative diction
words that are associated with strong feelings or emotions
specific adjectives
words that modify a noun or pronoun
sensory detail
description that appeals to the reader’s sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch, or taste
