ACTIVITY 4
Independent Writing
WRITING PROMPT: Think of a household product, personal product, or food item that you enjoy. Are there any brands that you always purchase or that you are always happy to see in your home? Write a letter to the company, expressing your opinions about the quality of the product you enjoy. In the letter, explain your history with this product, why you are so satisfied, and request more product information and/or promotional items. This letter should meet the requirements listed in the Learning Targets and Scoring Guide for formal/business letters.
Review the writing steps from the peer-constructed letter to businesses and apply them to your individually constructed letter.
a. Brainstorm a list of anticipated questions and information to answer each.
b. Create a list of ways that you could make this idea sound enticing to the company.
c. Decide which of these details to use, and outline the order in which to use them.
d. Draft the letter based on the outline.
e. Create a sense of closure in the last paragraph, and be sure to offer a
suggestion or make a request for next steps in the relationship.
f. Read the letter, making revisions as necessary. Keep in mind your
purpose and audience when considering the tone and level of formality.
g. Add the elements of a formal or business letter, and edit for mistakes.
Review active and passive voice options in sentence construction.
h. Produce a final, polished draft to submit to your teacher.
i. With the proper approval, mail your letter to the company.
