characters’ Perspective
In The Giver, Jonas discovers new information about the society he lives in as he talks to the Giver. In the excerpt, Jonas feels unsettled as he wrestles with his own conflicting perspectives and feelings about his world. His perspective shifts as the Giver uses Socratic questioning to lead Jonas to think about the consequences of his beliefs.
Skim through the excerpt of The Giver, looking for how Jonas’s perspective changes as he talks to the Giver. Think about what Jonas wants at the beginning of the conversation. Write down his perspective and give textual evidence. Then think about how he changes his perspective. Summarize what he believes at the end of the conversation and give textual support for it.
