Write a short opinion Paragraph
After discussing what choices you would make if you were Jonas, you have enough ideas to write a short opinion paragraph. Write a paragraph in which you finish the sentence “If I were Jonas ...” as the topic sentence. Your paragraph should focus on doing something different than what happens in the book or excerpt. Give a reason for your choice. Before writing, read the model short opinion paragraph provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences. Try structuring your opinion in the same way.

Share your work with a partner. Take turns reading your own sentences. Discuss your answers to the last sentence. What would each group member do if they were Jonas? Record notes from your discussion.

If I were Jonas, I would ask the Giver more questions. The Giver asks Jonas questions about choices, but the Giver doesn’t really say very much about what he thinks. I would keep the conversation going about choices and argue with the Giver a little more. Jonas lets the conversation change too quickly, so he feels unsettled.
