Planning a Comparison-Contrast Essay
Use the graphic organizer to plan your essay that compares and contrasts the attitudes about personal choice in the story’s society with the attitudes in our society. Are people in our society allowed to make their own choices? How much are they allowed to be individuals? How does this compare with the story’s society? Make notes in response to the questions that follow.

Comparison-Contrast Writing Prompt
Write a draft of your comparison-contrast essay. Be sure to:
■ Describe the attitude toward equality in the story.
■ Use dialogue, events, character details and other textual details to show the attitude. ■ Compare and contrast the story’s attitude with our society’s attitudes.
■ Explain how the attitudes are similar or different.
■ Use transitions to make the comparisons smooth and clear.
■ End your essay by reflecting on what lesson or warning the story has for our society.
