One theme of “Harrison Bergeron” is that trying to create complete equality can rob people of personal choices and happiness. George is a man of above average intelligence, but he must wear a transmitter to keep his thoughts scattered. The sounds are so loud and disrup- tive that he turns “white and trembling” and his “red eyes” have tears in them. A person who is pale and shaking with bloodshot eyes is not happy. Making George equal has made him less happy, not more happy.
