Write a Short Argument
After analyzing and evaluating Elie Wiesel’s use of adverbial and adjectival clauses in the excerpt from his Nobel Acceptance Speech, you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose one sentence with either an adjectival or adverbial clause from your chart. Write a short argument in which you explain the speaker’s use of the clause, state your opinion of how effective it is, and give a reason why. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.
MODEL: SHORT ARGUMENT
The speaker says, “As long as one child is hungry, our life will be filled with anguish and shame.” The adverbial clause in the sentence captures Wiesel’s sentiment that it is unacceptable for even one individual to suffer, and to allow this suffering is shameful. In my opinion, Wiesel’s placement and use of this adverbial clause is effective in stirring the listener or reader. “As long as one child is hungry,” is a clause that calls us to take responsibility because it’s clear that one child and many more go hungry every day.
