Argumentative Essay About Cell Phone Use Argument Writing
My Notes
Step 1: Introduction
You will be writing an argument essay that addresses the question: Should parents use devices or apps that disable the use of cell phones in cars by their teenage drivers? Think about the article in this unit on cell phone use and distracted driving. What does the evidence say about this issue? Also consider “Harrison Bergeron” and the excerpt from The Giver. What do these stories say about personal choices? Should societies limit choices and personal freedom? Should parents limit the choices their teenage drivers can make for the sake of safety?
Argumentative Essay Writing Prompt:
Write an argumentative essay that states a claim on one side or the other of the following question: Should parents use devices or apps that disable the use of cell phone in cars by their teenage drivers? Decide which side of the debate you stand on, and write an essay in which you convince parents to agree with you. Be sure to:
• Make a strong claim that clearly states your position on the issue.
• Consider your audience and the reasons and evidence that will best
convince them.
• Gather information from credible sources.
• Introduce and respond to one counterclaim by your audience.
• Use a vivid verbs and connotative language that supports your claim and reasons.
• Weave evidence and quotations smoothly into your argument. Step 2: Brainstorming
If you have an instant reaction to the question, pause and think about it. Try to develop responses to both sides of the issue. This will help you make an informed decision about where you stand. It will also help you to understand your audience and to address counterclaims, no matter which side you support. Work in small groups or with a partner to brainstorm ideas using the graphic organizer below.
