Write a Short Explanation
After analyzing adverbs and adverb phrases in “The Scholarship Jacket,” you have enough information to write a short explanatory text. With a partner or small group, write a short explanation of how the author’s use of adverbs enhances the story. Use the examples in your chart to give evidence from the story. Before writing, read the model short explanation provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences and try structuring your explanation in the same way.

The author’s use of adverbs and adverb phrases help to enhance the descriptions in the story. For example, she says, “I fully expected to win also.” This enhances the sentence by making it more dramatic. The reader can see how much she wants to win by the use of the adverb “fully.”
