Adverbs are words that add detail to, or modify, a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. They are often used to give details about the time and manner of actions in a story. Adverbs of time tell when, how long, and how often something happens. Adverbs of manner describe how something happens. The author of “The Scholarship Jacket” uses adverbs and adverb phrases to add details about when her story takes place and how the characters act and feel.
