Cognates
The English word condense and the Spanish word condensar are cognates. They both mean “to make shorter,” and come from the Latin root dense, which means “thick.”

In order to summarize a text, it is necessary to condense ideas. There are a few different ways to condense ideas.

Reread paragraph 2 of “The Nobel Peace Prize 1993, Biography of Nelson Mandela” and think about how you would summarize the paragraph. Choose two sentences to summarize from paragraph 2. Condense the ideas in the sentences and tell how you combined the ideas.

How Ideas Were combined
In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela’s campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC.
This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe.
Umkhonto we Sizwe was formed after Nelson Mandela convinced the ANC that violent tactics were necessary.
The preposition after was used to combine the ideas.
