Write a short Argument
After identifying figurative language in Travels with Charley, you have enough information to write a short argument. Choose one sentence from your chart. Write a short argument in which you explain the meaning of it, state your opinion of how effective it is, and give a reason why. Before writing, read the model short argument provided. Notice what information is in each of the four sentences. Try structuring your argument in the same way.
Will you please explain that?

The narrator uses the sentence “Charley became a maniac” to describe how Charley changed after he saw bears. A maniac is someone who is violent or acts wildly. This is a metaphor to show the difference of Charley’s behavior before and after seeing the bears. In my opinion, this metaphor is effective because it makes the reader understand exactly how seeing the bears affected Charley.
